How to Grill Potatoes in Foil
***For complete recipe instructions, see the recipe card below.
Prep Potatoes
- In a large bowl, add potatoes, butter, and Ranch seasoning and toss to coat.
- Next, divide the potato mixture evenly among heavy-duty foil pieces. Fold the foil to seal the potatoes.

Grill and Serve
- Next, add the foil packets to the grill and close. Cook for 25-30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
- Finally, open the foil packets and serve with sour cream and chopped chives (optional).

Recipe Tips
- Make sure you use heavy-duty foil for the packets—regular foil tears on the grill.
- Make sure the grill heat and flames aren’t too high. It’s best not to let the flame hit the foil directly. Doing so will cause some of the potatoes to burn instead of turning golden brown.
Recipe FAQs
Nonstick cooking spray is the trick! Spray the foil before putting the potatoes in the foil, and this will help ensure the potatoes do not stick to the foil.
You can check by carefully opening one foil packet and testing the potatoes with a fork. They should be tender and easily pierced.
There is no need to poke holes in the foil when grilling them. You will create a foil packet with the aluminum foil, which helps seal in the moisture to create deliciously tender potatoes.
Yes, you can place the foil packets on the grill alongside other meats or vegetables as part of a complete meal.
We recommend using heavy-duty aluminum foil to avoid this issue. However, you can also double-wrap the packets in foil so the butter does not drip out if the foil rips on the outer layer.
Storage Tips
SERVE: You shouldn’t leave these grilled potatoes in foil out for longer than 2 hours.
STORE: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
FREEZE: You can freeze these potatoes; just don’t let them sit in the freezer for too long. If you do, they can take on a grainy texture when defrosted if they get freezer burn. With that said, to freeze, transfer cooled potatoes to freezer-safe Ziploc bags and freeze for up to 3 months.

Recipe Variations
Get inventive with this dish! Add your preferred seasonings, such as chili seasoning, for a kick, or try thyme or rosemary for extra flavor. You can also toss in veggies like carrots, squash, zucchini, or onions into the foil packets—any vegetables you have on hand will work.
For toppings, consider salsa, cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, chili, bacon, and more! For added protein, add slices of cooked chicken or steak
