- Cool Whip Swap: Instead of Cool Whip, you can use two cups of freshly whipped cream.
- Oreo Flavors: This pie can be made with all Oreo cookie flavors. You can use what you have in your pantry or what catches your eye on the grocery store cookie aisle.
Storage Tips:
STORE: The pie will stay fresh for five days in the refrigerator. Make sure it’s tightly covered with plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent any air exposure that could dry out the crust or filling.
FREEZE: You can freeze your entire assembled pie for up to three months. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then again in aluminum foil for ultimate protection against freezer burn.
THAW: transfer the pie from the freezer to the refrigerator and thaw for at least 4-6 hours or overnight for best results.
How To Get Kids Involved:
Ages 2-3: Let them sprinkle the crushed Oreos on top of the pie for a fun way to be involved in making it. Baking with kids can get a little messy, but it’s all part of the fun! You may consider laying down a newspaper to contain any spills.
Ages 4-5: Let them loose on the Oreos with a Ziploc bag and a rolling pin to help crush them for the filling. Alternatively, you can teach them to use a food processor to complete this step.
Ages 6-8: This can be a messy but fun job! Let the kids help you pour the filling into the pie crust. You can supervise them to avoid spills or overflowing. Kids can unleash their creativity by decorating the top of the pie with dollops of Cool Whip.
Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe. You can talk with them about the different ingredients and how they come together to create a delicious dessert while they make the recipe.
Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe unsupervised while you do the happy dance in the corner!
Budget Tips:
While regular Oreos are a classic choice, you can use any store-brand chocolate sandwich cookie you have on hand or find on sale.
You may also consider using generic brands of cream cheese, powdered sugar, and Cool Whip. The quality is often comparable, and the price can be significantly lower.
