Apple Pie Ice Cream
This homemade Apple Pie Ice Cream captures all the classic flavors of a classic apple pie without the pie crust in a cool and creamy dessert. The creamy custard-like ice cream base perfectly balances the spiced apple mixture. With simple ingredients and easy ingredients, this homemade ice cream is the ultimate fall dessert. I love grabbing a bowl of this ice cream and a blanket to cozy up with on a crisp Autumn night.
Recipe Tips
Chill before churning. Cold ingredients freeze faster, so be sure to chill the ice cream mixture and even the ice cream bowl from the machine if you can.
Add the apple mixture near the end of churning. This will keep the apples in chunks instead of becoming mushy and breaking down into the ice cream.
Cook the apples just right. You want the apples cooked, but still have a crisp to them. If they are too mushy, they will make the ice cream have a grainy texture.
Ingredients & Estimated Cost:
Here is everything you need to make this ice cream and a few substitution recommendations.

- Granny Smith apples (1 ¼ cups – $0.45): Granny Smith apples are my favorite for this ice cream because of their tart taste, but you can also use Honeycrisp or Fuji.
- Butter (3 Tablespoons – $0.20): Helps to caramelize the apples. Butter makes everything better!
- Brown sugar (2 Tablespoons – $0.05): Use light or dark brown sugar to create the caramel flavor.
- Apple pie spice (1 ½ teaspoons – $0.10): If you do not have apple pie spice, use one teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon allspice to have a similar warm taste.
- Salt (Just a pinch – $0.01): Don’t skip the salt! It enhances the flavors and keeps the ice cream from tasting flat or too sweet.
- Heavy cream (2 cups – $3.69): Creates the rich, creamy base of the ice cream.
- Whole milk (1 cup – $0.25): Do not use low-fat milk, as the fat from whole milk helps create a smooth texture.
- White sugar (¾ cup – $0.10): Sweetens the ice cream.
- Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon – $0.20): Adds warmth to the overall flavor. Vanilla paste will also work.
- Cinnamon (¼ teaspoon – $0.02): Adds an extra spice and warmth to the ice cream. Use apple pie spice if you do not have cinnamon.
The recipe cost is calculated based on the amounts needed and will vary depending on fluctuating grocery costs.

Apple Pie Flavored Ice Cream Recipe FAQs
I developed this recipe for an ice cream maker and have not made it without one. However, I imagine it will work if you whisk the ice cream base, add the apple mixture, and pour it into an airtight container to freeze for a few hours.
I recommend peeling the apples first to have a smooth texture.
This can happen if the base wasn’t fully chilled before churning it.
