Texas Roadhouse Roll Recipe Tips
Because I’ve made this recipe dozens of times, I’ve made all the mistakes, so you don’t have to! I am sharing my top tips and tricks to help you make the best rolls on your first try. Once you realize how easy and inexpensive they are to make at home, you’ll skip the drive to Texas Roadhouse and make them at home instead.
1. Check the milk temperature carefully. If the milk is too hot, it will kill the yeast. Or if it is too cool, the yeast will not activate. The milk should be between 105–110°F.
2. Don’t over-flour the dough. This can cause the rolls to be too dense instead of light and fluffy.
3. Use a pizza cutter for clean cuts. This is my favorite way to cut the dough, as it makes it super quick and easy to cut the dough into rectangles.
4. Let the dough rise in a warm spot. A couple of suggestions include a slightly warm kitchen, near a sunny window, or in an oven, with just the light on.
5. Make Copycat Cinnamon Honey Butter. It’s a delicious addition to the warm rolls.

Ingredients and Estimated Cost
Here are the simple ingredients you will need to make this recipe, along with a few substitution recommendations and ingredient tips.

- Active dry yeast (1 packet – $0.33): The yeast should foam in 5 minutes to show it is active. You can also use 1 packet of Instant Yeast. Instant yeast does not need to be proofed.
- Milk (1 ¼ cups – $0.23): Whole milk or 2% milk is the best option.
- Granulated sugar (⅓ cup – $0.11): Honey can be used as an alternative.
- Unsalted butter (4 Tablespoons – $0.50): You can use salted butter; just decrease the salt amount to ½ teaspoon.
- Large Egg (1 – $0.25): Use a room temperature egg to help create a softer dough.
- Salt (1 teaspoon – $0.01): Sea salt or kosher salt will work.
- All-purpose flour (3 ½–4 cups – $0.88): Gradually add the flour to avoid over-flouring.
- Unsalted butter (3 Tablespoons – $0.38): Brush the tops of the rolls immediately after baking for the ultimate buttery flavor.
The recipe cost is calculated based on the amounts needed and may vary due to fluctuating grocery costs.
How to make Texas Roadhouse Copycat Rolls
Make the dough, let it rise, then cut it and let it rise again before baking. Let me show you how.
- Activate the yeast in a bowl, then make the dough in the bowl of a stand mixer with a dough hook.
- Let it rise until it doubles in size.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle and cut it into 24 even square pieces.

- Set the rolls on baking sheets and let them rise again until doubled in size.
- Bake the rolls until golden brown.
- Brush them with melted butter.

Recipe FAQs
You will know your yeast is active if it starts to foam and bubble after mixing with warm milk and sugar. This will take about five minutes. If it does not bubble, it may have expired, or the yeast could have been killed if the liquid was too hot.
You want the dough to be soft and slightly tacky, not sticky. If it sticks to the bowl, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.
If the yeast is inactive or the milk was not warmed to the correct temperature, it can keep the dough from rising correctly.

MAKE DOUGH:
- In a small bowl, whisk together milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top.

Can you make the dough ahead of time and freeze unbaked rolls
Jess Jankowski says
Hi Bea, we have not tested that with this recipe. We have only tested freezing them after baking the rolls. We are not confident that the rolls will rise properly after defrosting them.
