Ingredients

  • 5 cups sliced apples 5 large or 6 medium Granny Smith apples
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup quick-cooking oats
  • 2 teaspoons apple pie spice **see notes
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened plus additional for pan

FOR SERVING: (all optional)

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

PREP AND PREHEAT OVEN:

  • Move the oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

PREP BAKING DISH:

  • Butter a square 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish.

PREP APPLES:

  • Slice apples and place them in the prepared pan.

MAKE TOPPING:

  • In a medium bowl, add flour, oats, and spice, stir until combined.
  • Stir in butter until the mixture is combined.

ASSEMBLE AND BAKE:

  • Spoon the mixture over the top of the apples.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until apples are tender and the crisp is bubbly.

SERVE:

  • Serve warm or at room temperature with ice cream, caramel sauce, or whipped cream (all optional).

Notes

  • If you don’t have apple pie spice, you can use 1 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon and ¾ teaspoon nutmeg.
  • An apple peeler works great to peel, core, and slice the apples evenly.
