They say the best things come in small packages. This statement is certainly true for these Mini Apple Pies. They are already the perfect portion size, so no need to worry about trying to cut the perfect slice.
And don’t worry if you want to have more than one, they are mini size, so you almost have to have at least two, right?! As a bonus to their cuteness, they are so easy to make! We show you step-by-step just how easy it is.
You will be savoring your own Mini Apple Pie with a warm apple filling in between the layers of buttery crust topped with ice cream or whipped cream in no time at all with this recipe.

Yes! Chop and cook the apples before putting them in the pie crusts within the mason jar lids. This process helps make sure the filling is not undercooked or watery.
What apples are best for pie?
Granny Smith apples are our favorite to use when making apple pie. You can use Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious as a substitute if you do not have access to Granny Smith apples.

How to make Mini Apple Pies recipe:
STEP ONE: Make the filling. Then, transfer the filling to a bowl to cool.
STEP TWO: Cut out the pie crust into 3-inch rounds.
STEP THREE: Line the rings with pie crust. Make sure the dough goes up the sides of the lids.
STEP FOUR: Add the filling into each pie crust ring. Spread the filling into an even layer.
STEP FIVE: Cover each pie ring with pie crust strips.
STEP SIX: Transfer the mini pies to the prepared baking sheet. Brush each pie with butter and sprinkle with sugar.
STEP SEVEN: Bake until golden, about 20 minutes and cool.
STEP EIGHT: Remove the mini apple pies from the Mason jar lids and serve with desired toppings like whipped cream, ice cream, and/or caramel sauce.

The Flavor and Recipe Variations:
If you are short on time, you can substitute canned apple pie filling.
How long is it good for:
Serve and Store: These will keep at room temperature for about 3 days. When you’re not serving them, keep them at room temperature in an air-tight container.
Freeze: Carefully wrap each baked pie in foil and then place the pies in a large Ziploc freezer bag. They will keep for about 6 months this way.
How to get the kids involved with this recipe:
Ages 2-3: If you have an apple spiralizer, our kids love helping with this step to peel and core the apples. It is so fun!
Ages 4-5: Have your child practice counting while measuring and pouring in the ingredients for the filling.
Ages 6-8: Show them how to form the dough on the first mason jar lid and watch while they do the rest. They can also spoon in the filling mixture then assist with making the lattice pattern with the remaining dough strips.
Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe.
Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe, unsupervised, while you do the happy dance in the corner!

Mini Apple Pies

Ingredients
FILLING:
- 2 medium granny smith apples
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of water
PIE CRUST:
- 1 roll of refrigerated pie crust
- 1 Tablespoon butter melted
- 2 Tablespoons turbinado sugar or granulated sugar
FOR SERVING: (optional)
- Ice-cream or whipped cream
- Caramel Sauce
Instructions
MAKE APPLE PIE FILLING:
- Peel and core the apples. Then, chop them into ½-inch pieces.
- In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt butter.
- Once the foaming has subsided, add apples and salt—Cook for 3 minutes.
- Stir in brown sugar, spices, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Continue cook, stirring continually, until the apples are soft and the sauce is sticky about 1-2 minutes.
- Transfer the filling to a bowl to cool while you prepare the rest of the recipe.
PREP OVEN AND BAKING SHEET:
- Move the oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
PREP PIE DOUGH:
- Flour a clean and dry work surface, and unroll the pie dough onto the floured surface.
- Cut out 6 rounds with a 3-inch cookie cutter or a drinking glass with a diameter of 3-inches.
- Turn the inserts of all the Mason jar lids so that the rubber side is facing down and the shiny metal side is facing up.
- Place a dough round in each of the lids and press the dough rounds into the lids. Make sure you bring up the sides of the dough to cover the sides of the rings.
- Cut the remaining pie dough into 18 thin strips that each are 3-inches long. You will need 6 strips per mini pie.
ASSEMBLE:
- Place 2 teaspoons of apple pie filling into each ring and spread it into an even layer.
- Cover the pie filling with the pie dough strips, making a lattice pattern (over and under) as you go.
- Place the pie rings on the prepared baking sheet. Brush each mini pie with melted butter and sprinkle each with turbinado sugar (or granulated sugar if using).
BAKE AND COOL:
- Bake for 20 minutes or until the tops are golden and the filling is bubbling a little.
- Move the baking sheet to a wire rack and cool for 30 minutes.
- Unmold the mini pies from the Mason jar rings.
SERVE:
- Serve with whipped cream or ice cream and caramel sauce.
Notes
- If you’re short on time, then you can use canned apple pie filling.
- If there is no dough left to make the dough strip to make the lattice pattern, gather the scrap dough into a ball and roll it out and cut it into strips.
- In case you want to use an extra-wide Mason jar ring, you will get 4 mini apple pie from 1 roll of pie crust.
