Chocolate Dipped Sugar Cookies Recipe Questions Answered:
What is the difference between sugar cookies and butter cookies?
Sugar cookies and Butter cookies both have the same basic ingredients: sugar, butter, and flour. The difference between the two is in the proportions. Sugar cookies have a higher ratio of flour to fat. This makes the dough sturdier which makes them great for making cutouts.
How do you get sugar to stick to sugar cookies?
If the sugar is not sticking when you roll the dough balls in the dish of sugar you can try another method. You can bake the cookies first and then lightly brush the cookies with a mixture of one part light corn syrup and two parts water. Before the mixture dries, pour the sugar on the cookie. Then lightly tap the cookies on their side to take off any extra sugar. `
How do you know when sugar cookies are done?
You want to make sure you watch the cookies carefully. Overcooked cookies are the worst! You want to bake them just until they have a hint of color and that’s it! Any longer and they will be hard and crunchy and not soft and chewy as we want them.
How to Make Chocolate Dipped Sugar Cookie Recipe:
- First, make the cookies by mixing together the dry ingredients and set aside.
- Next, place 1 1/2 cups sugar and cream cheese in a large bowl and then place the remaining 1/3 cup sugar in a shallow dish and set aside.
- Pour melted butter over sugar and cream cheese and whisk to combine. Then whisk in oil until incorporated. Next, add egg, milk, and vanilla and whisk until smooth.
- Add flour mixture and mix with a rubber spatula until soft, homogeneous dough forms.
- Now divide the dough into 24 equal pieces. Then using your hands, roll dough into balls. Working in batches, roll balls in reserved sugar to coat and evenly space on prepared sheets, 12 balls per sheet. Next, using the bottom of a drinking glass, flatten balls to 2 inches in diameter.
- Bake cookies 1 sheet at a time until edges are set and just beginning to brown, 11 to 13 minutes, rotating sheet halfway through baking. Let cookies cool on sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack. Let cookies cool completely.
- Finally, melt the candy coating as per the package instructions. Spoon the melted chocolate over half of each cookie and top with sprinkles. Place cookies on parchment or wax paper to completely dry.
How to get the kids involved with this recipe:
- Ages 2-3: Let them help mix the ingredients together and decorate!
- Ages 4-5: Have them help measure out and count the different ingredients. Teach them how to push the buttons on the microwave to melt the chocolate. Have them help decorate.
- Ages 6-8: Let them help roll the dough into balls and place them on the cookie sheet. They can also help cover half of each cookie in chocolate and place sprinkles on top.
- Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe.
- Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe, unsupervised, while you do the happy dance in the corner!

The flavor and Recipe Variations:
- You can mix this recipe up by using either white chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate to have the sugar cookies dipped in.
What to Serve with Dipped Sugar Cookie:
Have a fun Cookie bar and offer the following cookies and drink:
More yummy desserts:
- Chocolate Glazed Biscuit Donuts
- Dark Chocolate Pecan Pie
- Death by Chocolate Poke Cake
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Bon Bons
How long is this good for:
- Serve: You can keep these out on a serving platter for several hours. I don’t recommend leaving them, uncovered, overnight because they will dry out quicker.
- Store: Keep the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for about 5 days this way.
- Freeze: You can freeze the decorated cookies by placing them in a Ziploc freezer bag for up to 2 months. Just make sure that they’re not decorated with hard candies like candy canes because hard candies have the tendency to “melt” in the freezer.
